The Old Man and the Sea resembles a Christian parable in many ways. As time passed by the ocean continued to seem vacant and the fishermen were unable to come across any fish. Fishing is what Santiago loves most in life. Catching fish for Santiago meant that he could be wealthy but it also made people look up to him, the old man and the sea essay.


Santiago loves the thought of popularity and pride. If Santiago caught the most fish or the biggest fish, the old man and the sea essay, people would think highly of him. In the end, he lost his fish to sharks who mutilated the fish.


The old man also had the pride and dignity of even meeting the fish. No person would ever experience the fish like Santiago did. The role of the sea is to provide a way for the reader to view Santiago. How far out in the sea he is willing to go demonstrates his determination, his knowledge of the currents demonstrates his wisdom, and his thoughts on the creatures demonstrates his kindness. Throughout the novel the man feels internally conflicted about killing the great fish.


For example, Santiago states, "The fish is my friend too But I must kill him. The old man and the sea talks a lot about faith and luck. The old man Santiago and the boy who he sails with believe in luck. Yet the young boy is no longer allowed to sail with the old man due to his fathers lack of faith. Right away I see how strongly the boy feels about the old man. The old man established morals and belief in the boy that his family did not, the boy cares for the old man like his own family.


But I will kill you dead before this day ends. The next character, the old man and the sea essay, Manolin, will be analyzed. Manolin is not present for much of the story. Its human nature to feel confident when someone compliments us. Santiago always missed Manolin when he was alone at the sea. Just like a father misses his son because every father wants his son beside him to teach him, and to man him up. After Santiago has a dream about his childhood, Santiago takes his boat out further than any other fisherman has gone before.


As Santiago is deep out in the ocean, he catches a huge marlin. Even though it took Santiago two days and two nights, he manages to finally kill it. Santiago put so much time an effort into killing the fish, that Santiago has also injured himself.


Although this experience was very troublesome…. He also has realized what age brings with it, and misses being worry free like the brave lions are. The story is a journey for Santiago, but it is the end of the journey for Hemingway. The author misses the abilities a young man possesses and through these themes, there is a story of the Old Man and the Sea. The blood draws in many sharks, which take chunks out of the fish as the old man defends his prize.
